September: The Intruder

Thanks to Marilyn for pinching during the summer doldrums here. I still have some things I want to write on Fireman's Ball, and don't mean to close down any discussion folks want to add, but I'm realizing it's time to announce another month's film. I decided to go this time, with a contemporary film, Claire Denis' L'Intrus/The Intruder (2005). It's readily available on DVD.

A festival hit from a now-established European art-cinema auteur, it's a film that I'm sure many will have seen already, but its aggressively experimental nature (among other things, it's an exercise in film narration) should give us plenty to talk about and justify members' close attention to the film. For neophytes, don't worry if it doesn't make much narrative sense at first: it's a challenging movie. I look forward to seeing what FOTM clubbers find in the work.

In the meantime, I am setting up a Google group for film club members. That way we can set up a schedule in advance, and I can keep the housekeeping discussions offline.

You may be interested in the current special issue of Film-Philosophy which concentrates on the relationship between Claire Denis and Jean-Luc Nancy. The issue contains a number of articles dealing with The Intruder and an article by Nancy on Denis translated here for the first time.

Terrific choice, Chris! This is one of my favorite films of recent years, and one that really rewards repeat viewings.

Wow, that's a perfect choice. I've been a little obsessed with both Denis and Nancy lately, and I really look forward to writing about this film. For those who are interested, Nancy's original essay L'intrus sheds some light on the film and the process of adaptation at work in it. The way that Denis weaves a loose narrative around Nancy's abstractions is fascinating. The full text of the essay is available online. (Apologies for the previous link, this is the full text now.)

I keep hoping to find a moment to finish a bit of writing on the Fireman's Ball myself, but am also eager to rewatch L'Intrus this month as well.

David, I really appreciated your newest issue. Great thought involved. It doesn't hurt that I, too, pretty much love this film. As soon as I'm done with my Telluride posts, I'll get going on a little something on C-Denis. Bonus: I look forward to seeing what the uninitiated get from her, and in particular this picture.
